The Silver series was the very beginning of the Game & Watch story. Designed by Gunpei Yokoi, these slim, silver-and-black handhelds launched on 9 April 1980 with Ball, which sold over a million units in Japan alone. The Silver series ran until 1981 and comprised five distinct games, establishing the LCD gaming format that would define the next decade.
Each Silver unit shared a common form factor — a flat, rectangular device with the LCD screen dominating the top two-thirds and a set of directional buttons below. The time was displayed in a corner of the LCD screen itself, fulfilling the "watch" portion of the name. These games were the first mass-market handheld LCD games.
