Overview
Gold Cliff is part of the Multi Screen series of Nintendo Game & Watch handhelds. Released in 1988, it was designed and manufactured by Nintendo R&D1. Like all Game & Watch units, it features an LCD display, a built-in clock, and runs on compact batteries. The unit plays a single game across two difficulty modes: Game A for standard play and Game B for a harder experience.
The Multi Screen series represented an important stage in the evolution of the Game & Watch lineup, building on the lessons learned from earlier series and offering refined gameplay and hardware design.
Gameplay
The player uses directional buttons to guide an on-screen character through increasingly difficult challenges. The pace and complexity of obstacles escalates as the score rises. Missing three opportunities — whether catching objects, avoiding hazards, or completing actions — ends the game. The two-mode structure gives Gold Cliff longevity beyond a first session, rewarding players who return to improve their personal best.
Legacy & Significance
Gold Cliff is part of the broader Game & Watch legacy that saw Nintendo sell over 43 million units worldwide between 1980 and 1991. The format directly inspired the portable gaming industry, leading to the Game Boy and ultimately to modern mobile gaming. Units from the Multi Screen series are today prized by collectors for their historical significance and the craftsmanship of their LCD displays.
