Overview
Balloon Fight is one of three Crystal Screen series Game & Watch units, released in 1986. Based on the NES game of the same name, it features the series' signature transparent LCD panel — a see-through display that allowed the game's characters and elements to appear to float in mid-air when viewed from the front. The effect is striking and unlike any other Game & Watch format.
The Crystal Screen series was sold primarily in Europe and produced in very small quantities, making Balloon Fight one of the rarer Game & Watch units to find in collectible condition today. Its transparent construction gives it a jewel-like quality that has made it a centrepiece of many serious collections.
Gameplay
Based on the NES Balloon Fight, the player controls a balloon-clad character who must float across the screen while popping enemy balloons by stomping on the enemies. Enemies also carry balloons and fly across the screen; popping both of an enemy's balloons causes them to fall. The player must avoid fish lurking in a body of water at the bottom of the screen. Three misses — losing all balloons or being grabbed by a fish — ends the game.
Legacy & Significance
Balloon Fight on the Crystal Screen is considered one of the finest-looking Game & Watch units ever produced, primarily due to the transparent display technology. The game's scarcity and visual appeal make it among the most sought-after units for serious collectors. As a Crystal Screen unit it was sold in limited markets and in limited numbers, and complete examples with original packaging command significant premiums.
